It’s the job a million designers would kill for, and Kenneth Bordewick of Beverly Hills Luxury Interiors got it. Prince William and Kate Middleton have engaged the Beverly Hills-based interior designer for their marital home, a 4,000 sf rustic farmhouse in Anglesey, North Wales, where they will live after they wed on April 29.
“It’s an honor to be chosen and it’s humbling,” Bordewick told the The Editor at Large. “The project will incorporate the quintessential elements of elegance combined with a young, vital feeling of the couple.”
Bordewick intends to design the home suited for a young couple living a normal lifestyle, vital and full of life. His vision was inspired by a story Her Majesty The Queen shared with him. When Her Majesty was young and newly married to Prince Philip Her Majesty was placed on Malta under the supervision of Her Uncle, Lord Mountbatten. During this brief time Her Majesty and Prince Phillip were madly in love, attending dances on the base, and able to live like a normal couple. Her Majesty looks back on that time period as her fondest memories, and wants her grandson to have that experience.
Bordewick flew to London mid-March to meet with the royal couple, at which time he was sworn to secrecy on divulging any specifics to the press. “It’s so secretive it’s unbelievable,” he said. “No one, even people in my own office, will know what’s going into the home. I’ll be at places acting like I’m doing one thing and I will end up doing another.”
Because the style of the home will be contemporary and warm, he plans to incorporate a few objects from the Royal Collections (Bordewick will have access to warehouses full of centuries-old furniture and art) though most pieces will be contemporary.
The project is expected to be complete within eight months. The couple will likely live in North Wales for two to three years before moving back to London.
Prince William is not Bordewick’s first Royal client. He’d worked for HRH The Charles Prince of Wales and a number of other British, European and Middle Eastern Royals including King Fahd of Saudi Arabia in Marbella, Spain.
